Anxiety Relief through Art: Procreate Tips for Relaxation
Use Procreate to ease anxiety: calming setup tips, three tutorials, and three therapeutic drawing exercises from Digital Art for Inner Peace.

Introduction
Anxiety is something many of us face, especially in our very busy lives. It can be tough to manage, but we believe that drawing can really help ease this struggle. Creating art can be a powerful way to calm your mind and express your feelings. In this blog, we'll show you how to use Procreate and art to relax and feel better.
Procreate has some cool features that make it perfect for reducing stress. The app is easy to use, so you can jump right in and start drawing. It has a ton of brushes and tools that let you create all kinds of art, from simple sketches to detailed paintings. Plus, you can undo any mistakes with just a tap, which makes the whole process less stressful compared to other avenues of art.
One of the best things about Procreate is its portability. You can use it on your iPad (or even your iPhone with Procreate Pocket), which means you can draw anywhere, on the couch, in a coffee shop, or even while waiting for an appointment. This flexibility makes it easy to fit drawing into your daily routine, helping you relax whenever you need it.
Drawing with Procreate also means no mess. You don’t have to worry about cleaning up paints or finding the right paper. Everything you need is right there in the app. This simplicity lets you focus on your art and your feelings, making it a great way to unwind and de-stress.
Section 1: Setting Up for Success
First things first, creating a comfy drawing space is key to enjoying your time with Procreate. Find a spot where you feel relaxed and won't be interrupted. Maybe add some soft lighting and if that’s not possible, you can even just pop your earbuds in and play your favorite chill music. This will help you get into a peaceful state of mind before you start drawing.
Next, let's talk about tools. Procreate offers a wide range of brushes and pencils, but you don't need to use them all at once. Start with a simple brush that feels good to you. Experiment with different tools to see what you like best. Don’t forget to play around with colors too, picking soothing shades (we’re talking all those lovely muted and pastel colors) can enhance your relaxing experience.
Finally, set a routine that helps you get in the zone. You might start by taking a few deep breaths or doing a quick stretch. Setting a timer can also be helpful, so you don’t have to worry about how much time you’re spending. The goal is to make drawing a regular part of your day, something you look forward to as a break from the hustle and bustle.
Section 2: Guided Tutorials for Anxiety Relief
To help you manage anxiety, we’ve got three awesome tutorials that are both fun and calming. Each tutorial is designed to help you focus, relax, and express yourself through art. Let's dive into how these tutorials can make a difference.
1. Watercolor Tie-Dye Tutorial
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to create beautiful, abstract tie-dye patterns using Procreate's watercolor brushes. The guide will walk you through each step, making it easy to follow along. The abstract colors and flowing patterns are perfect for letting your mind wander and relax. This type of drawing can help you release stress and enjoy the process of creating without worrying about making everything perfect.

2. Snowflake Tutorial
This tutorial focuses on drawing intricate snowflakes. Snowflakes are all about details and symmetry, which can be incredibly soothing. Following the steps to create these delicate patterns can help you concentrate and forget about your worries for a while. Plus, the symmetry in snowflakes can be visually pleasing and mentally calming, making it a great exercise for reducing anxiety.

3. Daisy Tutorial
In the Daisy Tutorial, you’ll draw simple yet beautiful daisies, focusing on symmetry and nature. Drawing flowers can be very therapeutic, as it connects you with nature and brings a sense of calm. The step-by-step guide will help you create lovely daisies, and the repetitive patterns can help you relax and focus. This tutorial combines the peacefulness of nature with the satisfaction of creating something beautiful.

For all of you visual learners out there, we got you! Here’s another lovely daisy video tutorial for you to follow:

Section 3: Three Exercises from the Digital Art for Inner Peace Course
The tutorials above give you something to follow. These three exercises, taken from the Digital Art for Inner Peace course, work the opposite way: there is nothing to copy and no result to get right. They come from the therapeutic-art side of the course, and each takes 5 to 15 minutes.
One setup tip used across all of them: start on a warm beige canvas instead of bright white. It's softer on the eyes and instantly less demanding than a blank white page.
"These exercises aren't meant to be strict instructions where you copy everything I do. I want you to connect with your creative self and let it guide you in your creations."
(from the Scribbling exercise in the Digital Art for Inner Peace course)
1. The 30-second scribble
Pick any color you like. Count 30 seconds slowly in your mind, breathing in and out, and let your pencil swing and flow across the canvas the whole time until it fills up. Then stop and look. Turn the canvas in different directions if nothing jumps out. When a shape suggests itself (in the course demo, a swirl becomes a flower and a corner scribble a small butterfly), follow that instinct and gently develop it with a few soft strokes.
Afterward, notice what you felt in your body and breath while drawing, and consider writing it down. That reflection is part of the exercise, not an extra.
2. One line, one breath
First, a Procreate tweak: turn off "Hold Pencil for QuickShape" so the app stops correcting your shapes. A slightly shaky line that matches your breath is exactly the point.
Then draw one continuous line without lifting your hand, while breathing in a 4-7-8 rhythm: in through the nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7, out through the mouth for 8. Repeat a few times and let the line loop and wander wherever the breath takes it. The breath acts like an anchor pulling you back to the present, and the line is just its trace.
3. Playing with shapes
Pick a background color that matches your mood, then draw three or more circles, squares, ovals, rectangles, and triangles, scattered across the canvas, overlaps welcome. Now take a second color (contrasting colors keep it playful) and softly shade the spaces between the lines.
The circles won't be round and the squares won't be straight, and that's the therapeutic part: loose, imperfect shapes feel human. When you're done, spend a minute just looking at it before you move on. You don't have to name it or keep it.
Section 4: Additional Tips
Once you’ve mastered the basics, there’s a whole world of advanced techniques in Procreate waiting for you to explore. These techniques not only deepen your skills but also enhance the relaxation and enjoyment you get from drawing.
First up, try experimenting with more complex projects. Challenge yourself with different subjects or styles that push your creativity. Maybe try drawing landscapes, portraits, or even experimenting with abstract art. The more you explore, the more you’ll discover what really clicks for you and helps you unwind.
Animation is another cool feature in Procreate that can add a new dimension to your relaxation routine. Creating simple animations, like a calming wave or a dancing flower, can be surprisingly soothing. It’s like bringing your artwork to life, which can be both exciting and therapeutic. Plus, Procreate’s animation tools are designed to be user-friendly, so you can dive right in and start animating without feeling overwhelmed.
And don’t forget about using Procreate’s time-lapse feature. It’s not just for showing off your progress, it’s also a great way to reflect on how far you’ve come. Watching your artwork come together in fast-forward can be incredibly satisfying and motivating. It reminds you that art is a journey, not a destination, and encourages you to keep exploring and improving.
By embracing these advanced techniques, you can continue to make drawing a meaningful part of your anxiety management toolkit. Whether you’re challenging yourself with new projects, adding animation to your repertoire, or reflecting on your progress through time-lapse videos, Procreate offers endless possibilities for relaxation and self-expression.
Hope you kick that anxiety away, happy drawing!
